Rudi Corens
Rudi Corens is from Belgian nationality and lives in Yogyakarta,
for over 15 years now. Before that he lived in Sri Lanka and in Thailand. He
considers Indonesia as his home country by now.
Rudi is a
man of many capacities: he designs jewelry, puppets, furniture, statues,
figures, figurines and all kinds of useful and unuseful objects. He paints
as well. What we admire most in Rudi (apart from his warm heart) is his
unstoppable creativity. Of any object there's only one. Every piece, whether
it is a piece of jewelry, a puppet or a mask: it is unique.
Over the years Rudi gathered a
group of 14 young Indonesian people around him in what is called "RC
studio", but what in fact is a big family. He trained these people and they
work out his designs, sometimes adding their own ideas. Only the jewelry is
made by a professional silversmith.
Rudi only uses silver for his
jewelry and he uses a lot, because most pieces are quite big. He designs his
jewelry around all kind of objects he finds: fossiles, shells, semi-precious
stones, antique beads or figures, seeds. We even have a bracelet made out of
a piece of black coral, which has been used by an Indonesian wonder-doctor
(dukun) to remedy diseases relieve from spells.
All his designs have one
thing in common: they are very colorful. Probably Rudi's background as a
stage designer (and opera director) is to credit for that. Click

Rudi's work
is popular in Indonesia, Australia, US and Singapore. Only, his production
is limited for obvious reasons. Some of his work is on permanent display in
a collection of contemporary art in Singapore.
